Webb Wins Playoff, Defeats Finau at Waste Management Open PDF Print E-mail

Webb Simpson celebrates after winning at TPC Scottsdale.

Scottsdale, Arizona - Standing on the drivable par-4 17th tee box

it appeared that Tony Finau was in prime position to claim victory at

TPC Scottsdale, but then the unlikely occurred. Finau's 3 wood off the

tee found the fairway bunker leaving a very tough 68 yard approach.

Meanwhile, Webb Simpson made the aggressive play, driving the green

leaving himself a lengthy eagle attempt. Finau did manage to hit the

green and make par to stay at 17 under par, but Simpson two-putted

for birdie. The lead was now an uncomfortable one stroke. Both hit solid

drives on the last with Webb hitting 3 wood leaving just a gap wedge

approach that he executed decently to 15 feet below the flag. Finau

had only 83 yards for his approach and stuck it to 7 feet. Advantage

Finau. Webb, needing to make his to have any hope, stepped up and

and drained the birdie. Now tied, Finau had his putt to close the deal,

but when his putt slid by, the pair both finished at -17 and went to

extra holes.

In the playoff, Simpson duplicated the 72nd hole, making quick work

of Finau when he canned another medium length putt to win his sixth

PGA Tour title.

"It's just a reminder for me to take care of the little things," Simpson

said. "And the big things seem to take care of themselves."

Finau, who was unsuccessful in his quest to win his second title on

tour was disappointed but admired his friend's performance. "He got

the upper hand this time, Finau said. "I love the guy, and that's one

hell of a finish. If you're going to birdie 18 a couple of times, you're

probably going to win."
