Europe Stuns USA - Wins Solheim Cup PDF Print E-mail

Team Europe celebrates after capturing the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles

Gleneagles, Scotland - It was 3 days of spirited competition that came

down to a final stroke at the last. Gleneagles hosted this edition of Team

USA (defending) vs the European home squad along the Scottish countryside.

It was Norway's Suzann Pettersen that stood over 6ft, just as Bernhard

Langer did 28 years ago at Kiawah. Only this time the outcome was different,

the fiery Pettersen drained the dagger that sent Europeans into an epic

celebration, and the Americans stunned in defeat at the 2019 Solheim Cup.

In each of the final 3 matches coming down the stretch, all the U.S needed

was a halve to retain the Cup, but it wasn't to be. Marina Alex vs Suzann

Pettersen in the last group still on the course was America's best hope,

then suddenly their only hope. Marina Alex had her own opportunity for

glory with the score knotted at 13.5 - 13.5, but her chance just slid by the

cup - setting the stage for Pettersen (who earlier in the week was the subject

of whether or not she should have been granted a pick by Euro Captain Catriona

Matthew. Moments later those questions were silenced.

A few of the swing matches that played a pivotal role in the drama included

Carlota Ciganda 1up over Danielle Kang, Georgia Hall flipped her match vs Lexi

Thompson winning 2&1, Megan Kang managed a halve vs Charley Hull and

Lizette Salas closed out Anne Van Dam 1up. In the anchor match Morgan Pressel

was routed by Anna Nordqvist 4&3.
