Rory celebrates after winning the WGC HSBC Champions




Shanghai, China - World No.2 Rory McIlroy defeated Xander Schauffelle in a

playoff to win the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai. After both McIlroy and

Schauffele finished regulation at 19 under par, the Ulsterman won on the first

extra hole at the Sheshan International Golf Club. Schauffele, the defending

champion birdied the 72nd hole to send the championship to a playoff, but

could only make par in the playoff. McIlroy, who was forced to lay up, sank a

birdie putt to claim his 27th career title and 3rd WGC win. The victory marks

his fourth of 2019 and the first since his triumph at East Lake.


Rory now leads the FedEx Cup standings and is fifth in the European

Tour’s Race to Dubai. McIlroy reflected on his day, “It’s a tough closing

stretch even though there are holes you think you should birdie. There are

dangers waiting around every corner."
