Cam Davis Wins Rocket Mortgage

Cam Davis celebrates after winning his first PGA Tour title

Detroit, Michigan – Aussie Cam Davis fired a 5-under par 67 on Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic to reach a playoff, his par on the fifth playoff hole was enough to capture his first PGA Tour title. He defeated Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann at Detroit Golf Club.

Davis missed winning putts on all five playoff holes, but after his birdie attempt at the fifth sudden-death hole (No. 15) barely missed, Merritt missed his short par putt that would have extended the playoff.

Davis, 26, holed out from the greenside bunker on the par-5 17th for eagle that tied him for the lead. “I didn’t have anything to lose so it wasn’t like I was nervous on 17, I was just trying to hit a good bunker shot,” Davis said. “Picked my spot and just flew it a little bit past it, jammed the flag. I mean, I don’t know, those I guess are the sort of things that need to go your way if you want to keep pushing forward.” Davis’ birdie on the 72nd hole got him to 18-under (270 total), Niemann and Merritt who led after 54 holes, tied him at the end of regulation.

The three-way playoff quickly became two when Niemann made bogey on the first playoff hole (No. 18). It was Niemann’s first bogey of the entire week.
