The Players Championship: Jay Monahan Maps Out PGA Tours Future

By Jason Bruno

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl – PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan laid out a plan that maps out the how ’24 season and it’s future schedule will look moving forward. He used the term “strategic cadence” to describe the schedule for future seasons during on his pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday at the Players Championship.

The 2024 schedule that is yet to be finalized will feature eight designated no-cut events with elevated purses and limited fields between 70-80 players. The three invitationals, the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bayhill, and Jack’s event – the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village will join the the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua as the initial events announced Tuesday . The remaining designated events have not been announced. Speculation traveling around the media center at TPC Sawgrass was that the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte and the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut will repeat as elevated events again next season. “Our 2024 schedule will look significantly different, with a consistent cadence of designated and full-field events,” said Monahan. He cited a mission statement of “growth and momentum” as the new path moving forward.

The Players, Masters, PGA Championship, U.S Open, Open Championship and three Fedex Cup Playoff events will round out a total of sixteen “elevated” or designated events on the 2024 schedule. The new Fedex Cup points breakdown will be as follows: winner of a “designated” event would receive 700 points, winners of The Players and the the majors would earn 750 points. Points for non-designated events hasn’t been disclosed. Monahan was emphatic that there’s going to be a worthy amount of turnover in designated events from year to year, bucking the notion that the new iteration of the tour isn’t just for the tour’s superstars. “That was an important element to the changes that we’re making. We wanted to make certain that there was real consequence and there’s real promotion, there’s real relegation,” he said.

The top 70 after the regular season finale – the Wyndham Championship, will get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 50 finishers in the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship will move on to the BMW Championship and earn a spot in the 2024 designated events.
