Rochester, N.Y – Brooks Koepka captured his third PGA Championship, and his fifth major championship on Sunday at Oak Hill Country Club.
A worthy duel between Koepka and Norway’s Viktor Hovland had the two competitors separated by just a stroke when Hovland approach from the fairway bunker hit the grass lip and embedded – all but ending the drama with Hovland taking double-bogey six to fall three shots back with two holes to play. Koepka finished 9 under par, two shots ahead of World No.2 Scottie Scheffler and Hovland.
The 33-year-old from West Palm Beach became the first player to win a major while playing for LIV Golf (Australia’s Cameron Smith joined LIV after his victory at The Open Championship in July 2022.
For Koepka, it was his first major victory since winning the PGA at Bethpage in May of 2019. He endured several seasons of injuries before returning to form at the Masters last month, taking a two stroke lead into the last round before finishing runner-up to Jon Rahm. This time around, the 54 hole lead held up, as Koepka put up weekend rounds of 66-67 in trying conditions Saturday before finishing off the star-studded leaderboard on Sunday to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.
“This is incredible, this is wild,” Koepka said. “I look back at where we were two years ago, everything that’s gone on. I’m just so happy right now, I’m kind of at a loss for words, but this is just the coolest thing.
“I’ll be honest I’m not even sure I dreamed as a kid that I was going to win this many. This is the coolest thing and I’m just happy to do it in front of these New York fans, I love you guys.”
